Natural and Artificial Reef Valuation - Coral Reef Literature Review

This project is a national assessment of existing literature and data on the socioeconomic aspects of coral reefs. It includes references for all accessible socioeconomic documents and data relevant for assessment of coral reefs. More importantly, the assessment will be analyzed to identify gaps in existing information which can then be used to prioritize future projects. The results of this project will be coordinated with similar products in other study disciplines (i.e. marine biology).

Background

In 2001, NOAA's National Ocean Service, including the Special Projects Office, Damage Assessment Center, and Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, proposed the development of a Coral Reef Value Literature Review under NOAA’s Coral Reef Initiative. The review found approximately 50 studies. The literature review provides an annotated bibliography of these studies, along with a database containing the estimated values in support of benefits transfer applications. The annotated bibliography is available on the Bibliographies/Benefits Transfer Page with an online search capability. The database was developed in Microsoft Access and is available below. It includes additional fields of information designed to support benefits transfer applications. The databases are periodically updated.

NOAA's Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS)

The bibliographic elements of this data will also be available on NOAA's Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS) web site. CoRIS is designed to be a single point of access to NOAA coral reef information and data products, especially those derived from NOAA's Coral Reef Initiative Program. CoRIS will evolve and grow in the months ahead to encompass an ever widening array of product and information offerings. Click here for details.

The CoRIS site also includes a library of coral reef literature, of which this data is part. The purpose of the library is to provide information of interest to scientists and others working with Coral Reefs. While the library mainly focuses on NOAA-related activities and materials, it is also a resource for information by others working in the coral reef community. Resources include Web sites devoted to NOAA's coral reef activities and publications and other coral reef Web sites and publications. Click here for details.

Status

The development and data compilation for the databases has now been completed. The valuation database is available below. The annotated bibliography is also available on the bibliographies/benefits transfer page of this site.
